5 Beauty Hacks Using Coconut Oil

A few days ago, clumsy me ended up spilling a cup of hot tea on myself. Needless to say the experience was painful but it ended up reminding me of one of the few things that work better than any medication for skin and hair. Yes, I am taking about the brilliant and multi-talented coconut oil.

Here are few of my favorite hacks using them:

Dandruff Treatment

Dandruff and dry scalp go hand in hand. To send moisture right to the roots with a nightly coconut oil treatment. Just apply lightly to roots and massage in, which will also stimulate hair growth. This oil also helps in countering the dryness that is caused my most of the anti dandruff treatments and shampoos.

Skin Ailments

Like I said, the moment  got the burn, my first instinct was to use coconut oil. It not only helped with subsiding the burning sensation, it also helped the burn to heal faster without leaving a mark. Coconut oil also helps in soothing bug bites and bruises. The reason that coconut oil is so effective in healing scars is because of the presence of  vitamin E and antioxidants.

Shaving Balm

I have used all kinds of shaving balms and creams but nothing has proved to be more effective than coconut oil. Applying a thin layer of coconut oil before shaving helps to trap the moisture in and leave the skin feeling as soft and smooth. I have also noticed that using coconut oil prevents razor rash and any kind of in-growth.

Hair Protectant

Coconut oil is one of the most effective and pocket-friendly hair protectant available. It can be used as a heat protectant before using heat styling equipments like a straighteners or curlers but also be used to protect your hair when you are going for a swim in the pool or ocean. It provides a chemical free barrier so that your hair absorbs a minimal amount of radiation, chemicals and salt. You can use 1 part coconut oil and 3 parts water in a spray bottle and use the same as a hair protectant spray.

Another way to use it is to apply a few drops directly as serum after hair wash as it prevents dryness and protects the hair from any heat and pollution. It also helps in keeping frizziness at bay.

Makeup Brush Cleaner

The anti-fungal properties of coconut oil make it the perfect option for removing makeup, dirt and any other kind of grime from makeup brushes and sponges. Combine two parts your favorite face wash or shampoo and one part coconut oil in a shallow bowl and swirl the bristles into the mixture. Rinse your brushes under warm water and stand them with the bristles facing down until they’re completely dry.
